MEL KOSITSKY
FCM INVOLVEMENT SINCE 1999:

Mel has erved as member of the FCM Standing Committees on International Relations, Finance and Intergovernmental Arrangements, and Convention Planning. A former FCM board member, Mel has been vice chair of Municipal Infrastructure and co-chair of the national water policy options team. He has also been a committee member of Community Safety and Crime Prevention, The Future Role of Local Government, Community Energy Planning, Race Relations, Aboriginal Relations, housing, arts and culture, and public-private partnerships.

He helped develop an FCM Partnership between Langley Township and the City of San Fernando, La Union, Philippines, which has now won two ICMD Awards and is still active. He currently represents FCM on the Philippines’ Country Strategy task force.

Mel Kositsky has been a Langley Township Councillor since 1993. He has served on numerous task forces, committees and commissions for Langley and the Greater Vancouver Regional District, including GVRD parks, water, waste management, and labour relations. He has also served on the Lower Mainland Treaty Advisory Committee for many years.

A past president and honorary lifetime member of the LMLGA, he is a former chair of both the LMMA Crime Prevention and Municipal Drug Strategy Committee and the Flood Control and River Management Committee. He now represents the GVRD on the flood control committee. He is also a former UBCM Director (1999-2000).

Mel has lived in the Langley area since 1976. He has degrees in journalism (University of Western Ontario) and political science (University of B.C.), and he has worked in the media in B.C. and Alberta as an editor, reporter, columnist, cable television host and marketing consultant. Part of his life has been spent raising and training standardbred racehorses. His volunteer work has included Big Brothers Big Sisters of Langley and the B.C. board, Langley Volunteer Bureau, Chamber of Commerce, Seniors Centre and Pacific Riding for the Disabled.

Membre du Comité permanent des finances et des accords intergouvernementaux, du Comité permanent des infrastructures municipales, du Comité permanent de la sécurité communautaire et de la prévention de la criminalité au sein des collectivités, du Comité mixte sur le rôle futur des gouvernements municipaux, du Comité permanent de la planification du congrès annuel et du salon de la municipalité, du Comité permanent des relations interraciales, et du Comité permanent des relations des municipalités avec les autochtones.

Membre du Comité permanent des relations internationales. Participation à la création d'un jumelage sous l'égide de la Fédération entre le Langley Township et la Municipalité de San Fernando aux Philippines.

Participation aux travaux des sous-comités sur le logement, les arts et la culture, l'industrie cinématographique, l'innovation municipale, et les partenariats entre les secteurs public et privé.  Participation à la création d'un partenariat sous l'égide de la Fédération entre le Langley Township et la Municipalité de Blainville, Québec.

ENGAGEMENT AU DIVEAU DES GOUVERNMENTS MUNICIPAUX :
Conseiller municipal (Langley Township) depuis 1993. A ce titre, Mel a participé aux travaux de nombreux groupes de travail, commissions et autres comités au sein du gouvernement municipal ou du District régional métropolitain de Vancouver, incluant des comités sur les parcs, la gestion des déchets et rebus, les relations de travail ou, encore la question des traités avec les peuples autochtones.

Ancien président de l'Association des municipalités du Lower Mainland (LMMA), la plus grande association régionale de la Colombie-Britannique, réunissant 31 municipalités et trois gouvernements régionaux. Ancien président du Comité sur la prévention de la criminalité et l'élaboration de stratégies en matière de prévention des problèmes reliés à la consommation d'alcool et de drogues illégales. Anciennement membre du Conseil exécutif de l'Union des municipalités de la Colombie-Britannique.

EXPÉRIENCE PERSONNELLE ET PROFESSIONELLE
Né à Montréal, Mel s'est établi avec sa famille en Colombie-Britannique en 1969. Il habite les environs de Langley depuis 1976. Il est un défenseur du principe du développement responsable, c'est-à-dire du développent qui s'inscrit à l'intérieur d'un meilleur équilibre entre les exigences de la croissance urbaine rapide et le maintien d'un environnement sain et d'une industrie agricole riche et viable.

Mel a reçu une formation en journalisme (University of Western Ontario) et en sciences politiques (University of British Columbia). Il a oeuvré dans le monde des média d'information durant près d'une trentaine d'années, à titre d'éditeur, de journaliste, de correspondant et de consultant en commercialisation.

Mel est aussi très actif au niveau de sa communauté et oeuvre fréquemment à titre de volontaire à l'intérieur d'organismes locaux. Il fut le co-fondateur du Langley Volunteer Bureau.
